Our Process for Upholstering Durable and Stylish Van Wall Panels

When it comes to custom campervan builds, creating high-quality wall panels is essential. Not only do they add to the aesthetic appeal of the van’s interior, but they also contribute to comfort and functionality. Here’s a inside look at how we upholster campervan wall panels to ensure they’re durable, stylish, and perfectly fitted.

Cutting Campervan Wall Panels with Precision

For intricate cuts, such as panels that fit around windows or other irregular shapes, we use a CNC router. This tool allows us to cut with incredible accuracy and efficiency, ensuring a perfect fit every time. We start with ½” lightweight plywood, which is both durable and easy to work with.

Adding Foam for Cushioning and Insulation

Once the panels are cut, we enhance their functionality with a layer of ⅛” Landau closed-cell foam. This foam provides:

  • Cushioning for a softer surface

  • Soundproofing to reduce noise inside the van

  • Insulation to help regulate interior temperature

This step ensures the wall panels are not only practical but also comfortable for long trips.

Upholstering Panels for a Polished Finish

The foam is then covered with an upholstery fabric, often a durable and stylish tweed. To adhere the materials, we use an industrial-strength contact adhesive. For larger pieces, we apply the adhesive with a paint sprayer, which is both fast and efficient. This method allows for even coverage and ensures a strong, lasting bond.

For the inside edges, where precision matters most, we use 3M 90 contact adhesive for a clean and professional finish.

Finishing Touches: Trim and Design

Every campervan we work on is unique, so we customize the finishing touches to match the van’s design. In this particular build, the panels will be accented with a maple trim ring around the windows, complementing the van’s maple wood interior. Small details like this make a big difference in creating a cohesive and polished look.
